I’m getting used to walking in the darkness. It has its own beauty.
I don’t like the saying “You need darkness in order to appreciate the light”. Why despise darkness that way? Why, when it reigns most of our lifetimes? What if it’s darkness the meaning and the real unique path of our existence? What if mastering life is being ok when nothing’s ok?
When we’re in the dark, we retrospect, we think, we cry, we long, we meditate. Time goes by very slowly, allowing us to learn the lessons deeper and better.
Living is easy with eyes closed, said The Beatles’ song. It’s easy to be content with ourselves when we deny our ugly parts, it’s ok to live day after day ignoring the sadness and decadence around us. But they’re there. They exist in our lives. They’re part of our lives. So why do we keep trying to avoid them?
Humans aren’t pure goodness nor pure evil, we are black and white, we are grey, we have so many colors, sometimes a few of them glaring all at once, some of them standing out. Ups and downs.
It’s good that you read beautiful motivational quotes, it’s good that you do your best to stay positive. But it’s awesome and brave and smart to embrace the bad times when they come. And they’ll come.
It’s not about victimizing oneself, it’s not about staying depressed. In fact, it’s the opposite: When we understand that darkness is as important and valuable as light, we can pause and think clearly when the rough patch arrives.
When we understand that bad phases happen and that they come and go, because that’s what being alive entails, and you can’t have one without the other… when you truly understand that, you’re taking the first step to a balanced life. You gain perspective and wisdom. You learn to stay calm in the thunderstorm, you appreciate what darkness gives you. Then you don’t need to compare it to the light, because you find it has its very own fruits to give you.
Solitude will help you find your best friend, that is: you.
Grief will show you how precious some people and events are, and how to appreciate them before they pass.
Crying will turn your tears into the perfect soul cleanser.
Heartbreak will make you rethink what you need and what you expect from others.
Take the gifts that darkness gives you, and you’ll shine so much brighter when you go back to the light.
